Ying Charoen Market has stood as a beloved city landmark for generations. After a major fire destroyed its original wooden structures, built up and layered over decades, the loss became the starting point for reimagining the market’s future. Ying Charoen Square transforms a traditional fresh market into a sustainable lifestyle destination for a new generation, while staying rooted in its history.
One of the earliest design challenges came from existing foundation piles, already driven into the ground to give displaced vendors a place to trade before formal design work began. The architecture had to work around these constraints, integrating them seamlessly rather than letting them limit the space. The result is a shift from a single-use market to a true square, a mixed-use destination that keeps the fresh market at its heart while introducing a community mall at the front with popular food brands and banking services to draw a wider range of visitors.
The design centers on openness and a strong connection to the market’s original character. The ground floor follows a Tai-thun, or under-croft, concept: an expansive open-air space without air conditioning that lets people move freely between both sides of the market, echoing the flow of the original alleyways. This semi-outdoor design also supports natural ventilation and daylight through a central atrium filled with greenery, reducing energy use while keeping the space comfortable.
Details throughout the building nod to the market’s history. The facade draws on the woven patterns of traditional market baskets, rendered in naturally cream-toned brick that reflects the same hue without requiring future repainting. The market’s original yellow and blue identity reappears through updated graphics and signage across the space.
Beyond retail, Ying Charoen Square functions as a community hub. A fourth-floor jogging track serves nearby residents, while the rear of the building houses the project’s headquarters. The fresh market has been upgraded with improved drainage for a cleaner environment, and the riverside area now hosts events, pop-up markets, and a children’s playground.
Ying Charoen Square is not simply a replacement for what was lost. It is a revival of the market’s spirit, bringing heritage and modern urban life together in one place.
